How to prepare for solo travel
As I shared in my last blog, my first planned solo travel was a good experience. I would definitely like to repeat it whenever time and health permit. The response to my post has been overwhelming, with many people realizing they want to take that solo plunge now or later. Contrary to some assumptions, taking a solo trip requires no special courage. In today’s connected world, it is easy and, with proper planning, safe to travel alone.
Here are some tips to plan a solo trip that will give you the maximum joy and peace in solitude:
First Step: The Decision to Go Solo
For most people, the first barrier is making the decision to go solo and convincing themselves and their family. Why would you want to do that, especially when your loved ones are willing to give you company?
Here are some reasons:
-
- Meditative Time: Solo travel gives you the space to be alone with your thoughts. It’s a great opportunity to ponder and streamline your thoughts.
-
- Discover Your Preferences: When traveling solo, you find your own choices and likes, which may be harder to identify when traveling with others, where compromise is often needed.
-
- Liberation: Solo travel can be liberating. This sense of freedom can be rejuvenating, therapeutic, or even healing.
Best solo travel destinations in India & Abroad
Thanks to the internet, finding solo travel destinations is easier than ever. However, it’s important to choose places where you’ll feel comfortable alone but not isolated.
Consider places frequented by many and offering engaging activities. Historical and cultural destinations like Varanasi, Delhi, Pondicherry, etc., are excellent options where you can be alone but not feel deserted.
For women, I recommend destinations with progressive cultures such as the Southern States of India, the North Eastern Zone, or Goa.
Travel Smart, Explore More: Budget Solo Travel India & Abroad
Going solo can sometimes be heavy on your wallet. The usual cost-sharing for rooms, transport, and meals is no longer an option, making it a less economical choice.
Some budget-friendly suggestions:
-
- Hostels or Dormitories: These can be cost-effective, especially if you don’t mind shared accommodations.
-
- Utilize Public Transport: Use shared taxis or state transport to save on costs, though this may involve some waiting and walking.
-
- Affordable Dining: Look for buffet or thali restaurants, where you can find good, inexpensive food at almost any location in India.
Prioritizing Your Well-being: Solo Travel Safety Tips
Safety is often the main reason people hesitate to travel solo. These concerns are valid, but there are steps you can take to ensure a safe experience.
-
- Share Your Detailed Plans: Always share your stay, travel plans, tickets, and itinerary with your immediate family.
-
- Maintain Consistent Communication: Keep in regular contact with loved ones through messages or calls. If using a taxi, share your live location with them.
-
- Minimize Your Cash Holdings: Don’t carry large amounts of cash, as it can attract unwanted attention. Instead, use digital payments via cards or UPI. This also leaves a transaction trail for added security.
How to avoid Boredom in solo travel
One challenge of solo travel is keeping solitude from turning into boredom. Here’s how to make sure you stay engaged:
-
- Plan Your Day: Structure your day with activities to keep yourself occupied.
-
- Stay in Social Spaces: Choose accommodations where other solo travelers gather. This gives you opportunities for conversations and engaging with others.
-
- Be Open to Interaction: Talk to people as you travel. You’ll be surprised how many are ready to engage in conversation once you’re open to it.
-
- Participate in Activities: Attend workshops, performances, or any local activities. Learn from the place you’re visiting and immerse yourself in the culture.
Above all, do what YOU truly want to do. Travel the way YOU want to. Be yourself and find the self along the journey you take
